ROME, Italy – Team USA’s women’s freestylers grabbed two medals this morning at the Matteo Pellicone ranking event in Italy. Skylar Grote of Beaver Dam RTC/TMWC won gold at 72 kg and Emma Bruntil of TMWC took silver at 85 kg. Both medalists competed in five-athlete round robins, which finished this morning.
Marilyn Garcia of California finished fourth at 72 kg and Abigail Nette of Army WCAP will wrestle for bronze this afternoon.
On her way to gold, Final X runner-up and 2022 Pan American champion Grote won four matches against accomplished competitors. She defeated her teammate Garcia 11-0 with a pair of takedowns and leg laces. Her second match was won by decision over Alexandra Anghel of Romania, 6-3. Anghel was 2nd in 2018 U23 Worlds and 3rd in 2018 European Championships. Grote teched Asysegul Ozbege of Turkey in the semifinals to meet Anna Schell of Germany for gold. Schell was a 2019 and 2021 World bronze medalist and 2022 European champion. Grote had two takedowns and scored on exposure for the 6-2 win by decision to win the weight class.
Bruntil, who was third in the World Team Trials process, had three big wins this morning. She notably defeated 2020 Romanian Olympian and 2019 European silver medalist Kriszta Incze 2-0 in her final bout of the day. She also topped Veronica Braschi of Italy, who took silver in the 2021 Matteo Pellicone Ranking Event and 2021 U23 World silver medalist Kateryna Zelenykh of Ukraine, 11-8. Her only loss was to 2019 European champion Tetiana Rizhko of Ukraine.
2022 U.S. Senior World Team member Abigail Nette is headed to the bronze medal match this afternoon. Nette won her first bout by forfeit and defeated Magdalena Glodek of Poland in the quarterfinals. Glodek, a 2022 U23 European silver medalist and Junior World bronze medalist, had a 5-0 lead before Nette came back to win 8-7. Nette fell to talented Grace Bullen of Norway in the semifinals, a four-time senior World Team member and 2018 U23 World champion .
Marilyn Garcia, who was third in 2022 World Team Trials Challenge Tournament and was 2019 NAIA champion, also competed in a round robin, placing fourth in the final standings at 72 kg. She had a 1-2 record and defeated Asysegul Ozbege of Turkey by decision, 5-0, with a big double-leg takedown worth four points. Ozbege was17th in 2022 Yasar Dogu ranking event.
Medal rounds begin at noon EST where Nette will face Nikolett Szabo of Hungary for bronze. Szabo placed third at the 2022 Sarigerme Beach Wrestling World Series and fifth at the 2022 U23 European championships.
